Charleston Restaurants: Finz Bar and Grill
Posted on October 15, 2011 by Louisa

After a walk on the beach we were craving sea food, and wanted to try out a new place.  Finz Bar and Grill fit both criteria.  It’s rather small inside (about 6 booths, plus a bar area and a few tables outside where people can still smoke), but it wasn’t crowded when we got there around 6pm.  Tony ordered the grilled seafood platter, with shrimp, scallops and flounder.  All the food was fresh, perfectly cooked, and simply seasoned with a bit of pepper; the shrimp were tender, the flounder was flaky and the scallops cut like butter.  The grit cake was an edible but underwhelming little fried triangle.  The smashed potatoes, however, are home-made, skin on, mashed red potatoes and are fabulous.  Louisa tried the seafood burrito, it had shrimp and scallops, sauteed red onions, and a very nice and creamy Gruyere cheese sauce. The burrito was good, and so were the home made potato chips we got as a side, but Louisa probably would go for the plain sea food next time. Tony said he’d get the burrito, though, so either dish is a good choice! This is one of the best sea food places we’ve been to, and the fact they have great (fresh, perfectly done) grilled sea food is an added bonus!---- DSCN2918 (large)

It must have been some sort of garage, because once the door is up, you could enjoy eating outside.  Especially today, 73 degrees in Charleston, with a slight breeze. However, we stayed inside at Finz. It is a bar, with multiple televisions, 5 beers on tap, NFL on. I decided on the fish tacos with seared tuna.

The Bad: I got confused on the meal. It was tuna tacos with pico de gallo, and wasabi mayo (I think). Maybe it was a Japanese-mex type of thing. The tuna may have been slightly overcooked. The fries were short, small pieces, indicative of the bottom of the bag.

The Good: The bar and grill calls for a casual, laid back atmosphere, and very much like what Cheers (the television show) would have been like. I didn't expect fine dining, so the meal served me well. The wasabi sauce added good flavor to the tacos (so yes, I'm still confused). I do believe their seafood is fresh, the bartender said he brought the shrimp in from our coast...yesterday.

In Conclusion: Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came; you want to be where you can see, our troubles are all the same; you want to be where everybody knows your name. Overall, worth a try.

Great Service and Better Food

by Margaret (1 review)
The food was good and the service was great. We highly recommend the crab dip - grab it whenever it appears on the specials list. We were impressed with the manager coming by to check on things and offering to top off our water glasses himself. It was a bit loud on a Friday night, but that's what Friday nights are for. If you want a quieter atmosphere, go during the week.
